Indian River Lagoon Coastal Cleanup

Fostering The Next Generation of Environmental Stewards

On September 21, 2024, the Lagoon Coastal Cleanup event brought together volunteers passionate about improving the health and beauty of the Indian River Lagoon. Hosted by GreenSpace Water Alliance, in collaboration with various community organizations and sponsors, to celebrate a global initiative to reduce marine pollution.

Volunteer Impact

Hundreds of dedicated volunteers came out to tackle the pollution along the Lagoon’s shoreline. Armed with gloves, trash bags, lots of smiles, and a commitment to environmental stewardship, the volunteers collectively cleaned 23 miles of shoreline, significantly reducing waste that would otherwise wind up in the Lagoon.

Collection Results

The collective efforts of the participants led to the removal of 3,588 pounds of trash from the shorelines of the Indian River Lagoon. Among the top items collected were:

  • 4,373 cigarette butts

  • 2,919 tiny plastic pieces

  • 1,881 food Wrappers

  • 1,705 plastic bottles

  • 1,428 beverage cans

  • 1,211 tiny foam pieces

  • 1,192 plastic bottle caps

  • 1,121 grocery bags

These staggering numbers demonstrate the importance of continued cleanup efforts to combat pollution and protect the Lagoon’s ecosystem.

Education & Awareness

Beyond trash collection, the Lagoon Coastal Cleanup was also an educational experience. Participants learned about the environmental threats of plastic waste, discarded fishing line, and other pollutants. The event reinforced the idea that every individual can make a significant impact to imporve our waterways.

Are you ready to engage? We dare you to become a contributor to the cause. With your help we will enhance our natural water resources and green spaces through community engagement, education, sustainable practices, and innovative solutions.

Looking Ahead

As we reflect on the success of this year's event, it’s clear that community engagement and education are vital in preserving the Indian River Lagoon for future generations. The GreenSpace Water Alliance encourages everyone to stay involved year-round through various environmental initiatives and looks forward to seeing even more participation in future cleanups.
